One of Mallorca's most thrilling festivals, commemorating the 1561 victory when the people of Sóller repelled an attack by 1,700 Turkish and Algerian pirates. The celebration begins Thursday with the investiture of the Valentes Dones (brave women who fought off pirates). On Monday, the spectacular battle re-enactment unfolds: 'Moors' land at Port de Sóller's beaches and fight their way through town — across the Pont d'en Barona bridge and up through the streets — until the Christians are proclaimed victors in Sóller's Plaça Constitució. Hundreds of costumed participants, cannon fire, and smoke fill the valley. Declared a Festival of Tourist Interest.
