Book early for July and August, when cars sell out. At Palma airport, check where you collect the car: a desk in the terminal, a short walk to the car park, or a shuttle bus to an office outside the airport. Most companies block a deposit on a credit card, but some local firms take none with their full cover, and some accept a debit card or cash.

Before you book

How deposit holds work

A deposit hold (pre-authorisation) blocks money on your card when you collect the car. It is not charged, but you cannot spend it until the company releases it after you return the car. The release can take from a few days to a few weeks, depending on your bank.

The hold is often as large as the excess, which can be €1,000 or more. Most companies accept only a credit card in the main driver's name for it. Buying the company's own zero-excess cover usually makes the hold smaller or removes it. In this list, 16 companies say they take no deposit, mostly with that cover.

Broker insurance or the desk's own cover

Booking sites sell their own “full protection”. It is a refund policy: if the car is damaged, the rental company charges your card and you claim the money back from the booking site or its insurer.

The desk does not count that policy, so it still blocks the full deposit and may offer its own cover again at pickup. If you want no hold on your card, buy the rental company's own zero-excess cover, online or at the desk.

Fuel policies

Full to full: you get a full tank and return it full, so you pay only for the fuel you use. 15 companies here use it.

Same to same: you return the car with the fuel level you got, often a quarter or half tank. 36 companies here use it.

Full to empty: you pay for a full tank at pickup, often with a service fee, and get no money back for fuel left in the tank. Read the terms before you accept it.

Young drivers

Minimum ages in this list run from 18 to 25; the most common is 21. Most companies also ask for one or two years with a full licence and charge a young-driver fee under 25. Some sell their zero-excess cover only to drivers over 25, so a young driver can face a deposit hold where older drivers do not.

Terminal desk or shuttle at Palma airport

A terminal desk is in the arrivals hall, and you collect the car in the airport car park. In this list: Avis, Budget, Europcar, Goldcar, Hertz, OK Mobility, Record go, and SIXT.

With car park pickup (25 companies), you walk to a desk or meeting point in the airport car park. Shuttle companies (16 here) take you by minibus to an office outside the airport, so allow extra time, especially on the way back. With meet and greet, staff wait for you in arrivals; with delivery, the company brings the car to you.

Driving in Mallorca

Palma's city centre, inside the ring of avenues and the seafront, is a low-emission zone (ZBE). Cars with the Spanish environmental label B, C, ECO or 0 may enter. On roundabouts, cars already on the roundabout have priority. Use the outer lane when you leave at the next exit.

Blue lines on the street mean paid parking, yellow lines mean no parking. Car parks at popular beaches fill early in July and August: arrive before 10:00, or take the bus. The bus map shows every line to the coast.

The road down to Sa Calobra is narrow, with hairpin bends and coaches coming the other way. Drive it early in the day and do not stop in the bends.
